Biomass offers immense growth potential: given the increasing demand for alternative and sustainable energy sources to replace fossil fuels, renewable raw materials are becoming increasingly important – both in Germany and all across Europe. To meet this expanding demand, the Brüning Group has signed a strategic agreement with Hallands Hamnar, the port of Varberg. This partnership aims to establish the port as a central hub for biomass at Sweden’s west coast and support the region’s energy sector in the long term.
For this reason, we will establish operations in Varberg at the beginning of 2025 as part of a long-term lease with the port. The designated terminal area and direct quay access create the ideal conditions for our partner us to expand in this sector.
‘The partnership with Brüning Group strengthens our position and creates additional opportunities within energy fuel management. We see great potential in expanding our activities in this area, which will create new growth opportunities for both the port and the energy sector in the region,’ explains Jonas Svensson, Business Manager at Hallands Hamnar.
With its vast experience as Sweden’s leading forestry port and Varberg’s geographical advantages, including short distances to European highways, direct rail connections and proximity to heat and power plants of the region, Hallands Hamnar is perfectly positioned to boost the biofuel market and ensure a sustainable energy supply. The biomass handled as part of our partnership come from forestry by-products, wood industry by-products and wood waste. These products include wood chips, firewood, pellets and bark – materials that energy companies use as fuels for facilities such as district heating plants.
‘The geographic location and professional collaboration with Hallands Hamnar meet all the criteria Brüning Group has been looking for. Varberg becomes a perfect puzzle piece in our Scandinavian expansion. A terminal in the port facilitates our ability to import or export biomass, providing our customers with the services they need. We look forward to a long-term partnership with Hallands Hamnar, the regional heat and power plants and industry in western Sweden’, comments Perry Mayr, Director Business Development Scandinavia at the Brüning Group.
