DIGESTATE PELLETS

Organic by-product from biogas plants

Origin

Digestate pellets are made from digestate, a by-product of biogas production. In biogas plants, organic materials such as maize, cereals, grass, slurry, manure or organic waste are fermented by microorganisms under oxygen-free conditions, producing biogas for energy generation. The remaining digestate is then dried and pressed into pellets, creating storage- and transport-friendly digestate pellets that can be used flexibly in both agriculture and industry.

Characteristics

Digestate pellets contain valuable nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. With low moisture content and moderate ash levels, they are robust and stable, while also providing a good calorific value, making them attractive as an alternative fuel. Another advantage is their continuous availability, as digestate is constantly produced as a by-product of biogas generation.

Use

Digestate pellets are primarily used as fertiliser in agriculture, either applied directly to fields or processed in composting or substrate systems. Their nutrient content supports sustainable soil management and promotes healthy plant growth. In addition, they can be used as a fuel for energy production – for example, in generating process heat for industrial facilities.
