SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS MADE BY BRÜNING

Logistics is constantly on the move – and that is precisely why it is continually evolving. For the Brüning Group, sustainable logistics means closely monitoring these developments and implementing them wherever they offer environmental and economic benefits. A key component of this is the ongoing modernisation of the vehicle fleet at Brüning-Logistik GmbH, our in-house forwarding company.

TECHNOLOGY THAT THINKS AHEAD

“Clean logistics means keeping up with technological innovations on a continuous basis,” emphasises Tobias Böder, Head of Logistics. That is why, whenever new vehicles are procured, we consistently opt for the latest models available, which are automatically associated with lower emissions. Vehicles are replaced with more efficient models in a fixed cycle of four to five years. Around 30 trucks alone are scheduled to be renewed this year. The effect is measurable: compared with their predecessors, modern models consume up to five litres less fuel per 100 kilometres.

However, savings are not achieved solely through new engines. The current generation of vehicles is equipped with intelligent assistance systems that actively support our drivers while simultaneously saving fuel. For example, so-called topographic cruise control systems analyse the route ahead and adjust the vehicle’s speed proactively: as a truck approaches a town or a roundabout, the speed is automatically reduced instead of being maintained until the last moment and then followed by abrupt braking. “So, in a sense, our vehicles think for themselves: they make optimum use of momentum and topography, coast in a controlled manner, and continue at a moderate speed. As a result, less energy is required to move vehicles weighing up to 40 tonnes,” explains Tobias. We also rely on modern technology for braking and tyre systems. Wherever possible, wear-free retarders are used to reduce the wear associated with conventional braking systems and thereby minimise particulate emissions. High-quality A-plus tyres further help to reduce tyre wear.

OPEN TO NEW DRIVE TECHNOLOGIES

In addition to optimising existing technologies, we are intensively exploring alternative propulsion systems and fuels. Particularly promising are so-called HVO fuels and other synthetic fuels that can be produced from recycled raw materials. For instance, plastics can be processed and converted into new fuels. Such approaches are an excellent fit with the circular economy and therefore also with the Brüning Group’s understanding of sustainability and its business model.

At the same time, we are closely monitoring progress in the field of electromobility. “At present, fully electric commercial vehicles are only of limited practical use in long-distance transport due to existing route structures and the fact that charging infrastructure is not yet sufficiently developed. Nevertheless, we are keeping a close eye on this area. Together with manufacturers and industry partners, we are continuously assessing which technologies are suitable and economically viable for us,” Tobias underlines.

READY FOR THE NEXT MILES

Whether modern assistance systems, efficient engines, or alternative fuels: future-proof logistics means continuously improving tried-and-tested methods – with a sense of proportion, an open mind, and a commitment to using resources sparingly. This is precisely the approach we are taking with our fleet, today and in the future.
