SUCCESSFUL RE-CERTIFICATION OF THE SURE EU SYSTEM

After successful certification in compliance with the requirements of the SURE system a year ago, the Brüning Group Germany GmbH also completed the re-certification process positively. At that time, we decided to take this step in order to be able to supply our customers with solid biomass as a fuel for biomass-fired power plants and as a purchaser of solid biomass with the corresponding fuels in the long term and in compliance with the law.

SURE (Sustainable Resources Verification Scheme) is considered one of the EU schemes recognised by the EU Commission and is a voluntary certification developed to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001/EC – RED II).

As previously reported, RED II aims to monitor the use of sustainable biomass in large power plants in the EU. However, the directive, which includes a wide range of criteria to ensure that biomass used in power and heat generation has been produced sustainably, has still not been implemented in all EU Member States. These delays are due to a variety of reasons – one of which is that national RED II implementation is to be harmonised with other existing national standards or biomass strategies.

We live an open dialogue with our business partners in order to comply with all innovations together. Transparency and legal certainty play an important role in this regard. SURE offers both us and our business partners permanent conformity with the EU Directive. The (re-)certification is particularly important to us, as it ensures that our partners’ needs for RED II-compliant fuels are covered, and it is also a way of assuming responsibility in a “sustainable” manner.
