CASHEW NUT SHELLS

Sustainable energy for power plants and industry

Origin

Cashew nut shells are a by-product of cashew nut processing and originate from the food industry. They are imported from regions such as West Africa, East Asia, and South America.

Characteristics

Cashew nut shells impress thanks to their high oil content, resulting in a high calorific value and substantial energy output during thermal utilisation. With a moisture content below 12 % on annual average, an ash content of less than two per cent and a calorific value of 5.5 to 6 MWh per tonne, they are a reliable and efficient biomass fuel. They comply with both EEG and EU RED standards and are ideally suited for use in power plants and industrial facilities.

Use

Cashew nut shells are primarily used as fuel in biomass power plants. Due to their high energy content, they can be used on their own or blended with other biomass fuels such as wood chips to ensure consistent quality and efficiency. Their thermal utilisation offers promising opportunities for diversifying energy supply and transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable resources.
