Turkey manure is generated as a by-product of livestock farming in turkey production facilities. It consists of the animals’ excrement combined with the bedding material used, such as wood shavings or straw.
Turkey manure is an RED II-compliant residual material and is suitable as a cost-effective input material for biogas plants. Its characteristics vary depending on the bedding material used: turkey manure with wood shavings generally has a higher structural stability, while turkey manure with straw bedding may contain a higher proportion of organic matter. In addition to its energy potential, turkey manure provides valuable nutrients with guideline values of approximately 20 to 25 kilograms of nitrogen, 15 to 20 kilograms of phosphate and 15 to 20 kilograms of potassium per tonne of fresh matter. The average gas yield is around 150 m³ per tonne.
Turkey manure is used in a variety of applications, particularly as a substrate in biogas plants for the production of renewable energy. It is also suitable for composting and for application on agricultural land as an organic fertiliser. Through its material and energetic utilisation potential, turkey manure makes an important contribution to sustainable circular economy processes in agriculture.
