INTERNSHIP WITH THE BRÜNING GROUP

As a company and employer, we are always interested in finding potential new employees. In view of the future of the company, it is also important to promote young people. However, they usually have little or no work experience. Students in particular have a lot of theoretical knowledge, but often lack the opportunity to put it into practice. We therefore like to offer students the chance to gain an insight into our day-to-day business. This is the only way to build up interest and create the basis for future cooperation. An internship over a somewhat longer period of time is just the right thing for this – and ultimately always an opportunity from which both sides can benefit.

In the past few months, we had Jakob Cross, a student from England and Northern Ireland, respectively, as our guest. In terms of our internationalisation, we were of course particularly pleased in this case that a student from abroad had applied to work with us.

Here is a short report about Jakob’s time with us at the Brüning Group:

Hi, my name is Jakob Cross, and I spent the last 4 months as an intern here at the Brüning Group. I am currently a student at Newcastle University in England where I study business, and when I got the opportunity to do an internship I decided to go abroad. I come from Northern Ireland and have lived there my whole life, however, my mother originally comes from Bremen making me half-German. Therefore I used this opportunity to do my internship in Germany, also with the hope of improving my German language skills. It was through my family connections in Bremen I learned of the Brüning Group; as family members had heard positive things regarding the company and that it was a great place to work.

The main line of work I performed during my time here was purchasing and sales, and I focused mainly on the international business side of the company, where my English would come in handy. I spent the first 2 months in the NAWARO department1 in Fischerhude, where I created databases of biomass burning facilities and sawmills across Scandinavia, UK and Eastern Europe. I then spent time making sales calls with the hope of expanding the international network within the department. I spent the next months working with the Waste Paper department and the Waste-to-Energy department in Bremen. I spent my time here forming different databases of suppliers and customers for the respective departments, further aiding current and future international capabilities. Within these departments, I also carried out countless calls to different countries and companies with the hope of setting up future business.

My time at the Brüning Group was really enjoyable. As my first real experience of office life it was also very insightful, and I have definitely taken away many valuable skills for future life and employment – and I think most people will agree that, among other things, my German has definitely improved.
