BIOCHAR – VERSATILE, EFFECTIVE AND INNOVATIVE

Last year, we added a new product to our portfolio: biochar. The raw material is biomass that is thermally carbonised by pyrolysis. With its positive properties, it is mainly used in mixtures with fertilisers, compost or manure, as an additive in biogas plants or in stable bedding.

As we wanted to convince ourselves of the effect, we started our own tests on potato fields of a partner farm, the Högen Hof. For this purpose, we spread biochar on the fields, which we received from our partner Circular Carbon, a company from Hamburg, for the experiment. The decisive phase, i.e. the potato harvest, is gradually approaching. We are curious to see whether the use of biochar will already have a positive effect in the first year.

A short video on Circular Carbon and our cooperation can be found here (German version only). 1

In addition to our own field tests, we want to actively develop the biochar market together with others and launch new projects. To this end, we recently attended the Biochar Summit in Helsingborg, Sweden. It was a very good event with about 400 participants – many new faces and companies who talked and discussed together in workshops and lectures about the future of biochar. During the summit, new projects and also scientific results were presented. We were able to exchange ideas with many of our partners with whom we are already working in the field of biochar or biomass. However, we were also able to make a number of new contacts and are positive that this will be the start of some new projects. In general, we could see that the use of biochar is becoming more and more professional and that there is a development towards larger industrial applications.

The next big event is already just around the corner. We will be attending the German Biochar Forum 2023 in Berlin under the motto “Climate protection, circular economy & energy transition with biochar”, the largest biochar specialist event in German-speaking countries. Here, leading scientists and experts will meet industry representatives, but also politicians and representatives of municipalities who are just approaching this topic will be there. We are already looking forward to attending the Forum, where we will once again learn a lot about new developments and findings in the field of biochar.
