RED III IN PRACTICE
Renewable Energy Directive
On the 20th of November 2023, the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) came into force. It requires EU Member States to transpose key provisions into national law by the 21st of May 2025 at the latest. The aim is to make the expansion of renewable energies – including bioenergy – more efficient, transparent and sustainable. One focus is on the cascade use of wood, the expansion of sustainability criteria, and greater control over the origin and processing of forestry biomass.
In addition, the directive introduces new requirements for smaller plants, more comprehensive documentation obligations, and restrictions on the promotion of electricity from biomass. EU member states are required to simplify administrative processes, speed up approval procedures and establish clear sustainability criteria in accordance with RED III. RED III thus significantly tightens the framework conditions for companies along the entire biomass supply chain.
