ENABLING EUDR
European Union Deforestation Regulation
The EUDR (European Deforestation Regulation) is an EU regulation aimed at curbing global deforestation and forest degradation. It came into force on the 29th of June 2023 and obliges companies to only place certain raw materials and products – including wood, beef, soy, palm oil, cocoa, coffee and rubber – on the EU market or make them available if they have been proven to be deforestation-free and produced in accordance with the law. The aim is to halt global deforestation and reduce CO₂ emissions from land use change.
The EUDR replaces the previous EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) and introduces more comprehensive requirements for all market participants. In addition to complete traceability of the supply chain, geographical origin data must be available and risk-based due diligence checks must be carried out. The obligation to comply will apply to large and medium-sized companies from the 30th of December 2025. Micro and small enterprises will follow on the 30th of June 2026. The EUDR thus significantly tightens regulatory requirements along international supply chains.
