Safety first – Fall Protection Using Wood Chips

Who does not like to fall softly? And especially for the dear little ones we wish that they fall softly and do not hurt themselves. If the thirst for adventure is too great or if they are romping around too wildly, good fall protection on the playground can prevent the worst from happening.

The European standards DIN EN 1176 for playground equipment and DIN EN 1177 for shock-absorbing playground floors have been in force since the end of the 1990s, i.e. appropriate fall protection or shock-absorbing flooring should be provided from a fall height of 0.6 m upwards. This is where wood chips come into play, a proven product in the field of fall protection with many advantages.

Wood chips are a natural, renewable material. Depending on the type of wood they are very durable and rot only slowly. The positive properties include the absorption and transfer of moisture. Wood chips can be used to prevent slippery spots, puddles and mud with the further advantage that the children’s clothes also stay clean. In addition, high-quality wood chips help to protect the wood of the posts of playground equipment from moisture and thus from rotting, because they drain off waterlogging and keep the wood dry. The free spaces between the wood chips absorb shocks and falls well. Due to their resilient and flexible properties, the individual parts soften a fall and thus absorb the impact. Abrasions, breaks and compressions can be avoided. Due to these properties, wood chips are permitted up to a height of 3 m, depending on the respective layer cover. A further advantage is the lower shifting and movement effect compared to sand or gravel. Even sub-zero temperatures are no problem for this natural product, as the heterogeneous surface prevents the formation of icy, slippery surfaces.

Our fall protection wood chips certified by the TÜV according to DIN EN 1176/1177 are available in grain sizes 5-30 mm and 5-50 mm. They are perfectly suitable as a base for playgrounds, e.g. in towns and communities, but also gardeners and landscapers appreciate the positive characteristics of the wood chips very much.
