Certification and Notification – A World of Its Own

The demands placed on the goods we trade are becoming increasingly complex – from sustainable forest management to legal shipment (import/export) and criteria for the acceptance of materials. For this reason we have set up special departments within the Brüning | Group that deal exclusively with the various certification concepts and notifications. Within the framework of our international orientation, of course we strive for international certificates in addition to national certification concepts. Furthermore, we have a notification department that is responsible for handling the cross-border movement of goods.

Put into practice this means that we have various certifications and market bulk materials in Europe after comprehensive official testing. As a holistic system, we practice our environmental management according to ISO 14001 – in which sustainable trading, the careful use of resources and legal certainty in environmental issues are of great importance to us in our everyday business.

Within the framework of forest and supply chain certification, we offer our customers FSC®, PEFC, SBP and ENplus certified biomass. We have also developed our own verification procedures. These serve to supply our power plant customers with verifiably eligible material. For example, the promotion of biomass in Germany is currently subject to the Renewable Energy Sources Act or EEG (German: Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz). These established verification procedures are audited annually by independent external bodies and ensure the best possible transparency.

Notification is an authorisation procedure for the import and export of waste. The authorities of the country of origin, the country of transit if applicable, and the authorities of the country of destination are involved in this process. In Germany, the exporter (notifier) is required by the Waste Shipment Act to obtain the official permits from all the authorities involved in advance. The permits are usually valid for one to a maximum of three years. The only exception is waste that is included in the so-called “Green List”. As this is not a severely contaminated, problematic waste, no notification is necessary. Particularly in the case of thermal recycling of waste, very thorough material testing is consistently required and international flows of goods are strictly monitored.

With the notification process we offer our customers a high level of compliance and supply security. To this end, we are qualified as a specialist Waste Management company (tested in accordance with the Ordinance of the same name) to handle and transport waste professionally. Jennifer Krüger from the Notifications department adds: “We work hand in hand with our colleagues from the operational departments. Our common goal is to be able to offer our customers the highest level of safety”.

With this orientation we are perfectly prepared for future requirements and are probably unique in our market. In this way we can always meet our own and our customers’ requirements.
