Many products are suitable as bedding material, e.g. straw pellets, straw granules, chopped straw, sawdust or compost. Here is another product that we would like to present at this point: wood shavings.
By now, wood shavings are considered the epitome of clean bedding – a classic in poultry farming and appreciated by horse lovers. Only selected raw materials are used for processing, which consist of 100% softwood (spruce, pine) and are guaranteed untreated. Wood shavings are produced in a special production process. The sawn timber is first technically dried in modern closed units before it is planed in an ultra-modern planing unit. This produces wood shavings, which are then sieved, dedusted and packed. The result is a product of extremely high purity that is free of fungal spores and other harmful plant components.
Among the advantages is the high spreading volume per kilogram, which makes it a very economical and environmentally friendly product. Wood shavings are particularly absorbent, which ensures improved hygiene. The elastic properties ensure greater comfort in the box bed. Wood shavings are particularly recommended for respiratory diseases and allergies, as they are very well dedusted and thus create an optimal environment in the stable. In addition, the reduced volume of manure and good odour absorption mean less work.
The material is particularly popular in horse keeping, as it enables controlled consumption and creates the best hygienic conditions for healthy animals. The high elasticity of the floor covering is gentle on both ligaments and joints. Poultry also feels very comfortable on the soft flooring. Especially for chicks, wood shavings offer decisive comfort due to the good spring properties, while at the same time encouraging the scratching of the animals.
